William H. Cheers

September 1, 1938 — January 15, 2022

William "Bill" Henry Cheers, son of the late Joseph Webster and Eliza Jane (Wright) Cheers, was born on September 1, 1938 in Church Hill, Maryland. His earthly journey ended on Saturday, January 15, 2022 when he transitioned home to his Heavenly Father.

Bill was raised and educated in Church Hill, Queens Anne County, Maryland. He served in the U.S. Army and upon leaving he returned to live in Wilmington/ New Castle, Delaware. He has been a member of Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, Delaware since May 1987, where he served as an Usher until 2019. (Psalm 84:8-10)

As a young child, he built his own bicycle which no one was allowed to touch, and this turned into his passion for fixing cars and building things. Bill worked as a chauffeur, a cook, and a mechanic. After 29 years of service, he retired from General Motors.

In his free time, he loved spending time with family, listening to gospel music and riding his motorcycle. He could often be seen with one of his riding partners "Greenie" (David Green) and grandson Karis riding on the back. When Bill's Girls got to "cackling like hens" too loud he would say "that's enough, time for y'all to leave", "adios". The family joke is when Daddy said "time to go" we fall into line by age and get to the car or get left behind.

Jokes and laughter were always shared with family and friends. His kindness for people showed in his works compassion, patience, and nuggets of wisdom with others when repairing cars, offering help to family, friends, and neighbors in their time of need. No one was ever turned away.
He marches on assigning the love and responsibility of his legacy to his wife of 58 years Anna Bessie; his daughters Stephanie (Conrad Skelton), Valerie (Orland Easton), Chanel and Robin (Charles Coverdale); grandchildren Aleama, Nicole, Dante, Morgan, Chanay (Will Kelley), Cherelle, Karis, Kayla (Chris Seay), Marc; 16 great-grandchildren; his siblings John Cheers, Catherine Smith (Guffrie), Faye Jones, Bessie Lively, Andra Cheers; and sisters-in-law, Grace Newton, Louise Robinson, Eva Green, and brother-in-law Ernest Green (Carla). He was preceded in death by his siblings Barbara Cheers, Dorothy Bailey, Thelma Cheers, Eleanor Cooper, Marie Tingle, James Cheers and Anna V. Cheers.

A multitude of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and neighbors. Special friends Walter Pauls, Sonny Ashley, Wayne Brokenbrough and Tim Tensley.
