Sophia L. Evans

Sophia Pearl Lester was born on October 4, 1940, in Marion, South Carolina to Lucious

and Cora Lester. She entered eternal rest on November 4, 2024, after a brief illness.

Sophia was the eighth of eleven children. She graduated from Claflin University in

Orangeburg, South Carolina where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta

Sorority Inc. While a student at Claflin University, she met and later married John Evans,

Jr. and had two sons, John Anthony (Tony) and Lester (Keith) Evans. Sophia was a

dedicated military wife and mother who cared for her family and made a home wherever

they were stationed. After moving to Delaware, she worked as an educator in the

Delaware school system earning a reputation as one of best and most influential

teachers in the state.

She served as a faithful member of Brandywine Trinity United Methodist Church and the

United Methodist Women organization for more than 40 years. Sophia shared the love

of God through her acts of service and giving generously of her time and talent to the

community and her extended family. She loved them all very much and cultivated many

friendships throughout her life. Having her in the world made a difference in the lives of

others. She was dearly loved and will be truly missed.

Sophia was preceded in death by her parents, Lucious and Cora. Her husband, John.

Her brothers William, Lucious, Jr., James Q. and Leon and sisters Evalena, Eddie Mae

and Lala.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sons Tony (Debra) and Keith. Her grandson, John

David. Siblings, Cora (Rye) Syphrett, Helen Lester, Shirley (Ted) Halley and a host of

nieces, nephews, family and friends.
