Sonia Mae Francis

April 30, 1950 — June 25, 2022

Sonia Mae Francis peacefully transitioned this life on June 25, 2022, at her home in New Castle, Delaware. Sonia was born on April 30, 1950, in the District of Gravel Hill, Parish of St. Ann Jamaica, West Indies. Sonia was the middle child of her proud parents Gwendolyn and Wilbert Francis.

Sonia's formative years were spent attending school, church, and interacting with her siblings - she was especially close with her youngest sister Rose. As teenager she acquired skills in sewing, home economics and culinary arts. Sonia became a homemaker and raised her six kids with the help of her dear mother, Ms. Gwen, and other family members.

Sonia migrated to the United States on December 30, 1983. A host of her immediate family members had settled in Wilmington, Delaware. Sonia's smooth transition to life in the United States was primarily due to the assistance of her brother Noel "Neville" Francis; her cousins Beverley Richards, Carol Gruewald, and the support of other family members.

Sonia retired from the Hotel Dupont in the hospitality field. She gained the respect of her coworkers and superiors due to her diligence, work ethic and dedication. Sonia was an avid music lover - she was always singing and dancing. She enjoyed traveling to Jamaica, car rides to see the local sights, and cooking Jamaican food for loved ones. Sonia loved her grandchildren; she took pride in babysitting them and enjoyed watching them grow up.

Sonia is preceded in death by her parents Gwendolyn and Wilbert Francis, sisters Rose Francis and Monica Pottinger, and her brother Carl Francis. To cherish her memory, Sonia leaves behind her six beloved children: Hugh Douglas (Anita), Michelle Henry, Dwight Jones (Stacy), Charley Jones (Kelly Ann), Sasso Jones (Dashia), and Stacia Jones. Grieving her loss are her 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She leaves behind her brothers Noel "Neville" Francis (Liz) of New Castle, DE and Cosmo "Gassy" Francis (Charmaine) of St. Ann, Jamaica. Her memory will continue to be cherished by a host of family and friends.
