Roberta Palmer

Roberta the daughter of the late Robert and Emma Garlic was born September 2, 1918 in Wilmington, DE. She peacefully entered Roberta Harding Palmer known to many as: Birdie, Mom, Grandmom, Mom-Mom and Aunt eternal bliss to join her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on October 27, 2011. Roberta was a faithful member of Coleman Memorial United Methodist Church since 1955. Roberta attended the public school system in Wilmington, DE and graduated from Howard High School in 1937. She also attended Virginia State and majored in Elementary Education and completed her graduate work at the University of Delaware. She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late William Cornelius Palmer, Sr., from this union four children were born: William, Ruth, Ericka, and Stephen. Roberta loved daily devotional reading of the Upper Room, the beach, dancing and the importance of family and friends. Being a wife and mother were Roberta's most important accomplishments in life. At Coleman Memorial she taught church school classes, served as chairperson of the commission on education and directed the education program for 32 years. Roberta organized the scholarship committee in 1971, organized and directed the tutorial program in 1982, served as unit leader for ten years and served as literature secretary for church school. Roberta also held several jobs, she taught at New London Avenue School in Newark, DE, she also taught at Absalom Jones School, Dunleith School, and Wilmington Public Schools. Roberta and her husband also owned and operated the family business, Palmer's Janitorial Services for over 50 years. Robert was always active in her community. She served as secretary of Price's Run Community Organization, secretary at George Gray School, P.T.A. and served on the Mayor's Advisory board for the City of Wilmington. She also served on the Maple Lane school advisory board, volunteered at the food closet at Brandywine Trinity United Methodist Church, Layton Home, and the used clothing store run by the Neighborhood house. She faithfully worked the voting polls for the Republican Party. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Cornelius Palmer, Sr., two daughters, Ruth A. Hill and Ericka B. Parker, two sons, William C. Palmer, Jr., and Stephen R. Palmer. Roberta leaves to cherish her memory eight lovely grandchildren; Keisha, Marc, William III, Michael, and Stephanie of Wilmington, DE; Monique, Denyse, and Jessica Hill of North Carolina. Twelve great-grandchildren, William IV, Anthony, Tae'Von, Derrick, Marc III, Kayla, Kaia, Keanna, Kenja, Ricco, Camryn and Natalie, two god-daughters; Diane Carter and Barbara Lovell, two daughters-in-law; Marsha Palmer and Constance Palmer Haywood, one adopted son-in-law, Walter Haywood, three nieces; Paula Handy, Jackie Smith and Grace Geneva, one nephew, Joe Palmer, four devoted friends, Anthony and Jean Williams and James and Evelyn Blount, and a host of friends.
