It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Preston Brown Jr., affectionately known as
"Butterball," who left this world on November 4, 2024, at Christiana Care in Wilmington, Delaware.
Born on June 7, 1962, at Wilmington General Hospital, Butterball was a cherished son of Mamie
Brown and Preston Brown Sr.
From a young age, Butterball illuminated the lives of those around him with his vibrant spirit and
infectious laugh. He received his early education at the Bayard School, followed by his time at
Wilmington High School, where he began to forge the incredible personality that would touch the
lives of so many. Preston's hobbies included listening to music at high volumes, which he enjoyed
through his big speakers, earning him the nickname "Chef Butter" for his good cooking skills,
equally matched by his love for eating. He enjoyed the company of family at gatherings, and BBQ’s.
often found dancing around and singing while listening his favorite songs. Butter also enjoyed
watching football games and fixing things around the house. (as always)
Following his education, Butterball went on to pursue a fulfilling career as a self-employed
contractor. For over 30 years, he dedicated himself to his work with passion and expertise, leaving
behind a lasting impact through his craft. He was known not only for his extraordinary skills but
also for the kindness and care he extended to each of his clients, treating their homes as if they
were his own.
Butterball was a man of many talents, exemplified by his unwavering commitment to his craft. he
devoted himself to ensuring that every task was completed with precision and care, often
reassuring those around him with his beloved slogan, “I’ll get the job done.” His knack for problem
solving and his innate creativity served not just as a vocation but as a passion, he approached each
challenge with a smile, often lighting up the lives of those lucky enough to know him. Renowned
among family and friends as “Mr. Fix-It,”. Preston was known for his distinctive walk and
undeniable swag, balancing his rugged work attire with his sharp dress sense for social occasions.
His journey in life was profoundly influenced by the mentorship of his good friend Jim, who guided
Butterball since his teenage years. Their bond transformed into a lasting friendship that became
one of the cornerstones of Butterball’s life, instilling values of dedication and hard work that he
carried forward throughout his years. His work was not just a job but a passion, which he pursued
diligently until his last days.
Butterball was especially devoted to his cherished friend Khalid Khan, who was family to him. Their
companionship was more than friendship—it was a beautiful tapestry of shared experiences, and a
genuine partnership built over years of collective endeavor. That bond continued to flourish until
his final days, as they worked together on numerous projects and shared laughter and joy derived
from their shared love for their crafts.
Butterball was also blessed with the friendship of Simon, another exceptional individual who held a
special place in his heart. Their friendship, like all the connections he made, was laced with
sincerity and understanding, each moment shared evidenced a devotion to uplifting, encouraging,
and being there for one another.
Preston was predeceased by his mother, Mamie Brown, whom he deeply admired, his sister
Marilyn Jerby, his children's mother Deanna Johnson, his granddaughter Ja'naija Johnson, and his
cousins Daryl Skinner and Michael Aikens, Khalid Khan, also predeceased him.
He is survived by his children, Johnesha Bailey, Preston Bailey, Brittney Bailey, and Tabias Brown;
his father, Preston Brown Sr.; siblings, Sharon and Howard Brown; and his grandchildren, Le'airah
Lynch, Darren Bailey, Leron Lynch, Ah'magin Briscoe, Leah Lynch, Rayln Nesmith, and Khloe
Hyland. He is also survived by Jeanette Watts, the mother of his child and his long-time lover and
friend, along with numerous relatives and friends who were dear to him.
As we celebrate the life of Preston "Butterball" Brown Jr., let us remember the warmth of his smile, the
joy that spread through the projects he undertook, and his boundless capacity to help and inspire
everyone around him. Butterball leaves behind a legacy of enduring friendships that will forever honor
his memory. His spirit lives on in the stories we tell, the laughter we share, and the love we continue to
give. He may have departed from our physical presence, but the impact he made in the hearts of all
who knew him will resonate eternally. Rest in peace, dear Butterball; you will be deeply missed and
lovingly remembered.
