Portia I. Hamilton

July 4, 1950 — December 1, 2020

Portia Irene Hamilton, daughter of the late Gertrude and Colen Chapman, was born on July 4, 1950 in Wilmington, DE. She was called home on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 in the Christiana Care Hospital.

Portia received her early education in the public schools of Wilmington and graduated from Howard High Career Center in 1970.

Portia earned her living as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and was employed by several nursing homes throughout the state of Delaware for over 25 years. During her time pursing her career as a CNA, she was known throughout the community as a loving caregiver for children everywhere she went. When you would stop by her home, you would not be surprised to find someone else's child that was not her own, besides her grandchildren, at her house staying the night. It got to the point the kids were calling her "Mom Mom". She opened her home to others in need no matter what. Portia enjoyed every minute of it.

In 2005, Portia remarried Gerald Hamilton a second time, in which they were together for over 40 plus years.

Portia was a proud member of The Covington Ensemble Choir of Simpson United Methodist Church. During her time there, she served on various ministries including women's choir, usher board and working in the kitchen. She loved to cook big dinners for her family! You could taste her love in the rice pudding and even those collard greens.

Portia was a people person who touched everyone she met. Portia was very outspoken and never once bit her tongue about anything. She voiced her opinion honestly whether it was good or bad. She enjoyed going to various department and grocery stores everyday if you let her. She did not mind spending your money! She had a love for purchasing Bed-In-A-Bag Sets, collecting over 50 plus. She also loved decorating the house for the holidays. Her greatest love was being a (mom mom) to her grandchildren. During her fight, one of her sisters (Meta) encouraged her to fight a hard battle and became strong in the faith. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7).

Portia was preceded in death by her siblings, Margo Laws, Freddie Laws, Tina Chapman and Rosalie Chapman.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Gerald Hamilton; her children, Eddie Gosa (Tameka), Nicole Gosa (Darryl), Shantay Chapman (Marlon), Kresston Hamilton (Davida), Patrice Hamilton; 3 sisters: Meta McGhee, Linda Chapman, Francine Chapman; 3 brothers: William Laws (Carol), Cornelius Chapman (Sandy), Byron Chapman; 6 stepchildren: Michelle (beanie) Hunter, Michelle Gray, Nicole Hamilton, Charlotte Roundtree, Sean Brunswick, Mia Demarteleire; 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2 best friends Terry Price and Pamela Higgin-Botham, and a host of great grandchildren to carry on her legacy. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
