Chestina Rogers Ledbetter was born to her late parents, Thomas Mills, Sr. and Hilda Rodgers, on August 15,1938 in Onancock, Virginia. She departed this earthly life and earned her crown of righteousness on Father's Day, Sunday, June 19, 2022 in Newark, Delaware.
Chestina received her education from Accomack County Public Schools, graduating from the former
Mary Nottingham Smith High School in 1956. Two years later, on July 2, 1958, she was blessed beyond
measure to give birth to her world - her first and only child, Sandra Ann. She later relocated to Mount
Vernon, New York, where she met and married her late husband, Leroy Ledbetter. During this time, she
was employed by Bendix Corporation in the Eclipse Pioneer Divison, where she helped manufacture
parts for rocket ships.
Chestina's roots were long and deep in the church. She held numerous positions while being a longstanding member of Gaskins Chapel AME Church in Savageville, VA: Choir Member; Worship Leader, Manager of Gospel Group "The Mighty Gospel Voices", Vacation Bible School Instructor, and Women's Ministry Director. Her favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5-6. She loved singing hymns and did not consider herself ready for church if she was not adorned with a beautiful hat to complete her look. In
her latter years, her favorite interests remained attending church, singing, playing word searches, and
spending time with family.
Chestina never met a stranger. She had a heart of gold and loved everybody. She greeted everyone with
her beautiful smile and kind, warm spirit. Chestina was very crafty, loved to cook and bake - and eat! She
enjoyed sewing by hand, puzzles, and card games. She even played the piano by ear.
After moving with family to Delaware, Chestina soon after joined Highway Word of Faith Family Worship
Center. She was a faithful member for 20 years. On Father's Day, June 16, 2013, Chestina was bestowed
the honor of Church Mother, a title she cherished and gracefully held until God called her home.
Chestina was predeceased by 6 siblings: Doris, Robert Lee, Thomas Jr, Evelina, Jacqueline and Laura.
Mother Chestina Ledbetter leaves to cherish fond memories: her daughter, Sandra and son-in-law, LeRoy Bailey, Jr.; granddaughter, LaToya and grandson-in-law, Brandin Hudson; granddaughter, LaTrina Bailey; great-grandchildren, Brandin II, Zara, and Blake; Goddaughters, Joanna "Binky" Watson and Kourtney Watson; one cousin she helped raise as her own, James "Duke" Rogers; sisters, Myrtle Hall and Mary Emma Downing; brothers, Bruce Mills and Willis Mills; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
