Marlene Jeffers

October 16, 1933 — October 16, 2024

Marlene Jeffers: A Life of Strength, Dedication, and Love Marlene Jeffers entered this world on October 16, 1933, in Millington, Maryland, born to Anna Wilson and Clarence Jeffers, Sr. As the middle child among her siblings, Marlene grew up surrounded by family in a small, tight-knit community. Remarkably, she departed this life on the same day she entered it, passing peacefully on her 91st birthday, October 16, 2024, at Accent Care of Wilmington-Christiana Care Hospital in Wilmington, DE.

Marlene’s journey began in Millington, where she attended the local school before advancing to Garnett High School.. Her pursuit of knowledge did not stop there; she continued to Morgan State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Driven by ambition and a desire for change, Marlene’s move to New York City marked the beginning of a groundbreaking chapter in her life. She embarked on a bold career with the New York Transit Authority, where she did not just break barriers—she shattered them. As the first woman of color to be appointed Superintendent, Marlene’s rise was not just a personal achievement but a monumental leap forward for women’s empowerment. Long before the movement gained momentum, Marlene was already championing equality, setting a new standard for leadership, and inspiring countless others to pursue paths once deemed impossible.

After a trailblazing career, Marlene retired in 1996 and relocated to Bear, DE, to be closer to her family. Her legacy as a fearless pioneer continues to resonate, serving as a testament to what true courage and determination can achieve. Marlene’s life was filled with passions that extended far beyond her professional accomplishments. She was an avid reader, a devoted fan of women’s sports, and a lifelong supporter of the New York Mets. Her love for national politics was just as fierce; as a registered Independent, Marlene believed deeply in the power of democracy. She eagerly cast her ballot in every election, staying informed and engaged. If given the chance, she would have proudly voted for Vice President Kamala Harris as President, seeing it as another historic stride for women of color in leadership.

Her home was always filled with the warmth of family and friends, as she delighted in cooking and creating lasting memories. Even in retirement, Marlene remained active, taking daily two-mile walks and finding joy in the simple errands that kept her connected to her community. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Sr. and Anna, as well as her brothers Clarence Jr., Thomas, Arnette, Arnold, Alvin, Wendell, and sisters Ethel, Mildred, Violet, Dorothy, and Irene. She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience through her surviving family: her brother James; sisters Anna and Annetta; her devoted daughter Sharon; grandsons DeVaughn(SerRitta) and Jamar; great-granddaughter Hyltin; cherished son-in-law Cedric; step-grandchildren Toni, Tammel, LaTasha and Deron; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Marlene’s spirit will be cherished not only for her remarkable achievements but for the unwavering strength, kindness, and grace that defined her life. She was guided by a quiet altruism, often giving anonymously to family members with one simple request: that they pay her blessing forward to someone else in need. As the middle child and a true Libra, Marlene had an innate gift for bringing balance to any situation. When life’s scales tipped unevenly, Marlene was the one to restore order with wisdom, compassion, and a firm tone that made her message clear. She had a unique ability to balance kindness with resolve, ensuring her words were not only heard but understood. Her legacy of generosity, resilience, and harmony will continue to inspire and live on in the hearts.
