Mahalia was born September 22, 1927 in Wilmington, Delaware to the late Julian L. and Rachael V. Anderson. She departed this life peacefully on August 29, 2013 at St. Francis Compassionate Care surrounded by her children. She was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church where she gave her life to Christ. Mahalia graduated from Howard High School in 1946. She was dedicated to her family and extended family which included daily telephone conversations with her children and grandchildren. Her greatest interest included reading black history, WWII, sewing, playing pinochle and everything that had to do with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Mahalia was a domestic worker during her employment years. She was the wife of the late Curtis Howard. Mahalia leaves to cherish in her memory children, Samuel K. Anderson, Jr. (Vrana), Nana B. Bey (Wayne), Cynthia Y. Sturgis (Lawrence), Maurice C. Howard (Sharon), Patricia A. Howard (Juan Johnson), Stephen L. Howard, Sr. (Renee') and Barbara J. Howard-Jeffers (Richard). She also has 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Robert E. Anderson, Sr. (Madeline); brother-in-law, Joseph P. Howard, Sr. (Josephine) of Riverside, Alabama and cousin, Stella Dunning; sister-in-law and devoted friend, Gwendolyn Evans Taylor, Gwendolyn Waters, Lucy Hamilton, Dorothy Kelly, Christine Stansberry, Rita DiGenova along with a host of loved ones and special Friends.
