Mabel Edna Brown was born on August 28, 1916 in Quitman, Georgia. She was the second born of six children to the late Walter and Amanda Brown. In 1924 the family relocated to Chester, PA where Mabel attended the Chester Public Schools. Mabel joined the Calvary Baptist Church in Chester atthe age of 12. There she sand in the Young Adult choir and later joined the senior Choir in which she was a participating member for 40 years. Mabel was also a member of the Rosella Woods Missionary, Group #1. In 1981 following her retirement, Mabel relocated to Wilmington, DE and later in 1997 she transferred her church membership to the Cornerstone Fellowship Baptist church under the leadership of Reverend Donald Dunnigan. Mabel was married to the late Vernon G. JOnes on February 20, 1935. From this union came 7 children. May, as she was lovingly called, worked as a case worker for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare from which she retired in 1980. She also was a member of the Board of Directors of the Delaware county Homemaker's Association. Mabel was the recipient of various awards, honors, and was a multi-gifted matriarch. Mabel was predeceased by her parents Walter and Amanda Brown and four siblings Doris James, Rubye Young, Marie Grasty, and Simeon Brown. Mabel is survived by her seven children: Vernon L. Jones of Tacoma, Washington, Barbara J. Irvin (James) of Wilmington, DE, Ronald W. Jones (Mary) of Harrisburg, PA, Jocelyn D. Hollis of Wilmington, DE, Jerome S. Jones, Sr. (Catherine) of Chester, PA, Deborah R. Reaves (ALton) of Bear, DE and Juneil L. Flemming (Carl) of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister Eva R. Bird of Atlanta, GA; 25 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
