Ludy Monroe Leatherbury was born on January 3, 1954, in Wilmington, Delaware to Anna E. & Ludy L. Leatherbury. He departed this earth on November 29, 2024, at Christiana Hospital of Newark, embraced with love by his daughter, Simone Leatherbury.
Ludy aka “Lute,” received his early education from Wilmington Highschool. He then enlisted into the United States Airforce in 1973 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1976. In 1985, he began his employment as a Fireman for the city of Wilmington, and proudly served his community for several years. In his later years, he held other miscellaneous jobs throughout the city until his retirement.
Ludy was a faithful member of Wilmington Manor Church of God of Prophecy, where he was affectionately known as Brother Ludy, and was a well-loved servant of the Lord and his church. He enjoyed his duties as an Usher and the opportunity it gave him to connect with his church family. He also loved to praise the Lord with his amazing singing voice whenever asked.
Ludy was a caring and giving man. A proud father, and gentle grandfather, who jumped at any opportunity to spend time with and do things for his grands. He was also a loving brother and uncle who deliberately made a point to steal away fun moments with the little ones. He loved watching old sitcoms, dressing to the nines, and was a loyal Cowboys fan. When he mentioned his favorite past times, they always involved being with his family, reflecting on the days when he played sports like baseball and football, or the peace he found when he would go for long drives in his car.
Ludy was preceded in death by his mother & father, sister Zelda, and brothers Charles, Ronnie, Louis & Michael Leatherbury.
Ludy is survived by his siblings Brenda Merritt, Jay, Susan, Sheila & Joanne Leatherbury. His sons, Stephen Wisher (Sina Wisher), Shannen Leatherbury, Darnell & Daron Lewis, and daughters Simone Leatherbury (Stephen Napier, Jr.), and Cheryl Cooper. His grandchildren Keshanna, Malcolm, Malik, Marley, Alahni, Aria, Shaniah, Raina, Nylo, Darnell F. Sr., Starr & Jade Cooper, as well as extended grans Le’Ajah, Corey, Devonne, Marion & Marleigh, six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
