Kenneth Douglas Brown Sr.

July 21, 1940 — February 12, 2022

Kenneth Douglas Brown, Sr. Born July 21, 1940, affectionately known as "Kenny Brown" made his peaceful transition on Saturday, February 12, 2022, in Wilmington, Delaware surrounded by his caring son Darryl.
Kenny was a well-known vibe musician and over the past 50 years played in several clubs when things for Wilmington musicians were jumping. He was greatly influenced by Wilmington's own great vibe player, Lem Winchester. After hearing him and later nationally known vibe player, Milt Jackson, Kenny knew this was the instrument he wanted to play. But his first love for playing music came from his talented brothers, Bo Brown (piano) and Ronnie Brown (tenor sax) in the middle 50's.
Kenny was born in Wilmington, Delaware to the late Frances E. Brown and Clarence E. Brown. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth D. Brown, Jr., brothers Clarence "Bo" and Ronald "Fathead" Brown.
Kenny was educated in the Wilmington School System. In his senior years at Howard High School in the late 50's, he was an outstanding basketball player. His ambition after leaving school was to play with an NBA team but chose to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1960. There he continued to play basketball until his honorable discharge.
After coming back home after the service, Kenny worked in several places including Electric Rubber & Hose, Sears (for over 20 years), and Home Depot. He also attended Goldey-Beacom College. He was also a member of the Jazz Appreciation Society along with close friends that would give music functions in the middle and late 80's. After years of playing, he retired his vibes and played them only at home for the last several years.
Kenny is survived by his son, Darryl Brown (and Darryl's sister, Trayce Brown) and sister, Elaine "Cissy" Brown, brother, Michael F. Brown-Carty (Iris), four grandchildren, Kenneth Brown Ill, Darryl Brown, Kennika Caesar, and Kimberly Surratt, great-grandchildren, close relatives and friends who have enjoyed him for the years he spent on this earth.
He will join his brothers, son, cousin Vernon, and other deceased musicians who graced us with the best jazz in Wilmington.
