Julia Mae Corey Shands Williams, God precious gift of life was welcomed home by Our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 20, 2016. Julia Mae Corey Shands Williams, affectionately referred to by many as "June", was born on March 25, 1927 in Greenville, NC to the late Lewis and Emma Freeman Corey. She was one of eleven children born to this union. She was educated in the Greenville Industrial School System. For many years, she was employed In New York as an interior decorator in Downtown Manhattan. She was very much valued and admired for her FLAIR with style and devotion to her craft.
Julia had a passion for cooking, decorating her home, and spending quality time with her loved ones. She took great pride in possessing outstanding sewing abilities which enabled her to design clothing for her beloved children. She was very much admired by her many friends and associates in the states of Delaware and New York. Additionally, she developed lasting friendships through her years of employment, membership in the senior citizen center and all her additional hobbies.
At age 21, she married James Shands, who coined her with the name "June Bug". Several years later, she married George Williams and remained in holy matrimony with him until the time of his death. In 1986, she moved from Bronx, NY shortly after the death of her beloved husband, George, and made Newark, DE her home. Due to a decline in her health, in 2007 her daughter, Felecia provided her care in her home, and in 2010 she moved in the home of her daughter and son-In-law, Joe until she answered her call from the Lord.
Julia was preceded in death by her son, George; sisters Lillie Dale, Mamie Ruth, Cornelia and Geraldine; brothers Lewis, JR., Ocee, William, Elbert, Herbert, and Lorenzo. She loved family and friends to no end knowing that one day she would see them in everlasting eternity.
Left to cherish Her legacy and memories are four daughters: Mrs. Nina Chandler (Berkley) of Portsmouth, VA; Mrs. Muzella Hayes of Newark, DE; Ms. Yvette Shands of Camden, NJ; and Mrs. Felecia Shands Tilghman (Joe) of New Castle, DE; one son: James A. Shands of Bronx, NY; and one brother: Mr. Charles Corey (Sarah) of Hampton, VA, fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will always hold her near and dear to their hearts with fond and precious memories.
Julia, your presence and elegance could certainly light up a room. You will always be remembered for your wit, laughter, light hearted spirit, and delicious food…..especially your greens, pineapple cake, and Spanish rice!!!
