Joy Germaine Hunter was born November 1, 1941 to the late
Lionel and Lucille Trotman in Brooklyn, New York. Joy was
educated through the school system of New York City. She was
baptized at an early age under Reverend Chapman of Bethel
Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. Her mother Lucille and
grandparents Deacon and Deaconess Ralph and Lillian Paulson
kept Joy grounded in the word. Joy met the love of her life not too
long after high school. Joy and John A. Hunter were married in
the summer of 1960 and of that union a beautiful baby girl was
born. Their only child June Lynn Hunter.
If you knew Joy, then you knew she loved to travel. She was
always on an adventure! From hasting bus rides to various places
to flying all over the world. She took her first pilgrimage to Africa
with her mother Lucille to the holy cities Jerusalem and Egypt. Joy
worked hard just as much as she traveled. Joy spent many years
working for the New York Telephone Company in the payroll
department. Then latr she went on to work for British Airways.
After retiring from both jobs, Joy had all the time to focus on her
true passion, Christmas decorating.
Joy would decorate for almost every holiday, but Christmas was
her calling card. Joy turned her home into a Christian Christmas
wonderland. Her house in Brooklyn was featured on the news a
few times. People came from all over to see her house and to
take pictures. But Joy gave all of that up to move to Delaware with
her “kids” as she affectionately called her daughter,
granddaughter, and great granddaughter. While in Delaware, Joy
joined a new church family at Shiloh Baptist Church in
Wilmington, DE.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents Lionel Trotman and
Lucille Poulson, and her husband John A. Hunter. Her name and
memory will continue to live through her only child June Lynn
Hunter, granddaughter, Destinee L. Hardy and great
granddaughter Miracle J. Hardy. Joy leaves to mourn “Sons of her
heart” Harry Boone, Jr., Nathaniel McDonald (Jr.), Isaac Hardy,
and Anthony Washington. Her birthday twins, Dawn Poulson and
Patricia McDonald. Her oldest and dearest friends, the “South
Brooklyn Crew” Pat, Dottie, Cookie, Beverly, Noonie, and Snootie,
sister in laws Delores McDonald, Earline Thomas, and Valerie
Hunter, her Eastern Shore sisters, Nellie Thomas, and Isabella
Six whom preceded her in death. A special thank you to Joy’s
niece Rachel Uptegrow for always being on call for every
emergency. Lastly, but surely not least, Joy leaves a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
