James L. Newman, Sr.

September 20, 1946 — December 13, 2024

James L. Newman Sr. went to be with the Lord on December 13, 2024, at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, surrounded by family. He was born on September 20, 1946, in Wilmington, to the late Alice and Joseph Newman.

He was a proud and loving father, grandfather, life partner, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a "One Call Away" kind of Dad, and man in general, who was there when needed. James genuinely enjoyed entertaining his family and friends and was exceptionally good at it! Known for his tough yet loving nature, James showed love in his own way, sometimes through words, sometimes through action, but always with support. James was a skilled "Mr. Fix-it" who loved house projects, working on cars, and using his skills and abilities to help others. His skills and willingness to help were unmatched, and his legacy of resourcefulness will live on in children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of learning from him.

A member of the Presidial Honor with the United States Army, James proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. In his later years of life, he rededicated his life to Christ and joined Coleman Memorial UMC in November 2018. Through sermons, Sunday school teaching and Bible studies his knowledge, understanding, and faith grew, giving him a sense of comfort and peace. Though he faced life's challenges James never wavered in being true to himself, he remained authentic to the very end. His, sometimes blunt but honest, genuine, and loving spirit were qualities that made him beloved by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his son Andre and sister Phyllis.

Cherishing his memory is his life partner Marcelete B., sons; James N. Jr., Darius H., Jamarce B., daughters; Monique S., LaShawnte R., Darmika B., Andrescent B., Jamear J. (Fred), Semaja B., Namwen B., Ameselete B., brother Joseph N. Jr., and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
