James Edward Burgess

James Edward Burgess was born to the late Ruth Burgess Swing, on June 24, 1934, in Henery County, Va. He left this earth on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at 9:09 am.

Jim was formally educated in the Henery County Public Schools of Va. At the age of fifteen, he moved to Wilmington, Delaware. Jim began his work life in 1952 delivering

TVs and installing antennas. He started driving Big Trucks in 1955 and then became an owner/operator in 1961.

In 1962, Jim started driving motor coaches. During this time, he rented a garage and started his own business repairing and rebuilding large trucks and motor coaches as well as driving them. Jim worked for many bus companies, starting with Krapts Motor Coach, Peter Pan Motor Coach, H.B. Tours, AS-Midway Tours, and lastly Superior Tours until his retirement in 2014.

Jim’s Christian life began at an early age. He joined Henery County’s Mayo Baptist Church at eight years old. He stayed there until he moved to Delaware where he joined

Bethel AME Church in 1950. In 1975, Jim moved his membership to Shiloh Baptist Church where he is still a member.

Jim loved fishing and traveling, he was sure to go on any fishing trip. The late Tom Henry was his long-time trucking buddy, along with the late Norman Jones and Jim

Ingrams. They would often talk in the shop and on the phone for lengthy periods. Jim loved his grandchildren the best and adorned being around them. He loved all young children. If you saw him smiling, look around and you would be sure to see a young child.

He leaves to mourn: his wife; Penny Wells-Burgess of twenty-seven years (27), daughter; Cheryl Burgess, son; Shane, daughter-in-law; Ayasha, two (2) grandsons; Shane Jr. and Shamar, one granddaughter; Shania, two great-granddaughters, sister; Debbie Allen (Gerald), brother Albert (Anna) and a host of cousins and friends.
