James Alfred Chavis son of the late Reverend James J Chavis, and the late Luvenia Chavis of Baltimore, MD; was born on May 1, 1939 in the city of Baltimore, MD. James peacefully departed this life at his home at the age of 75, on May 15, 2014 in Wilmington, Delaware. James A. Chavis was a great family man and a loving husband, father and brother. He married Sarah LaRue in 1962, from this union two beautiful daughters were born Crystal and Sabrina. He was also was the loving father to Arwilla, Calvin, and Michael. James graduated from Howard High School with his diploma in 1956. He then joined the Navy and completed a four year term. In 1964, he was employed for Chrysler, as an Assembler, where he worked for more than 35 years. He continued his employment with the Local 1183 UAW as an Administrative Assistant, and after retirement he worked as a bus driver for the Brandywine School District. James A. Chavis preceded in death by his mother Luvenia Chavis, of Baltimore, MD; his father Rev. James J. Chavis (Pappy), of Wilmington, DE; and his two sisters Barbara Jean Wilkins, of Baltimore, MD and Patricia J. Smith, of Wilmington, DE. He is survived by his wife, Sarah E. Chavis, of Wilmington, DE; his children, Sabrina Chavis, Crystal Chavis, Michael LaRue, Calvin LaRue (Charlene), and Arwilla LaRue-Broadnax; his 2 brothers Jay E. Chavis(Danita) and Gerald Chavis, and 3 sisters Juanita C. Slaughter, Carolyn Dunn, and Valerie Smith(Robert); his grandchildren Arieous Sr., Latanya(Damon), Calvin Jr., Eboni(Paul Jr.), Crissheon(Terrance), Jamarv, Mykia, Larrell, Nina, Turhan Jr., Devin, Latoya(Corey), Cordale, Caree, Mia, Mya, Dakai, James L., Corey, Kaylah, Tajah, James F.; his great-grandchildren Keiarah, Arieous Jr., Damon Jr., Tiana, Teja, Nakee, Sanai, Lanyra, Jenyla, Nykiera, Paul Joshua, Jalen, Isiah, Jarmarv Jr., Elijah, Ashyra, Shyanne, Jasmine, Larrell Jr., Kyaire, Jala, Turhan Jr., Tyler, Devyn, Tahj, Robert, Latrell, Zakiyy, Corie, Cheyenne, Morgan, and Dakai'lah; his uncle Fred Chavis Jr.(Edna); his sister-in-law Delores Barrett; Special friends of the family, Robert Bright, Michael Baldwin, Marvin Broadnax Jr., and Lawrence Bracy III.; his longtime friends Mr. & Mrs. Bobby Dixon, Melvin and Clare Griffin, and Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Simpson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. James enjoyed throwing the best family barbeques, taking vacations, bowling and getting together for holiday dinners. He especially enjoyed his horses and casinos! His family and friends will always remember him as a proud, caring, and god-fearing man. He would go above and beyond (literally) for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was truly the PATRIARCH of his family. His humble spirit and his legacy will live on through each and every one of us. He is forever in our hearts.
