Imogene Foxx Chandler was the second eldest of six children born to Henry Foxx and Anna Mae Truesdale. She was born on August 3, 1934, in Mount Holly, NC, and departed this life peacefully on November 24, 2021. In 1957, Imogene married Lucian L. Chandler, Sr. and through this union, three children were born, Lucian Jr., Lita, and Lynnette.
Mrs. Chandler spent most of her career working for Kingswood Community Center in Northeast Wilmington. In 1952, she began her role as a daycare teacher at the center. She worked in this position for 34 years, often teaching several generations of a family. Mrs. Chandler loved teaching children and helping them to reach their full potential. She was a staunch supporter of early childhood education programs, especially for minority children, who she felt were over-represented in special education programs nationwide. In 1988, she was promoted to Day Care Director at Kingswood and served in this capacity for nine years. In 1997, Mrs. Chandler continued her career in the early childhood education field, as Daycare Director at Community Day Nursery, which was located in New Castle, DE. She formed many long-lasting friendships throughout her career and was loved by the children she cared for and well respected by her colleagues, peers, and members of the community.
Because she valued education, Mrs. Chandler returned to school and completed her Associate's Degree in early childhood education at Wilmington University. She worked full-time during the day, took classes in the evening, and still found time to nurture and raise her three children. She has received numerous awards, honors and community recognition throughout her career. In March 2011, Mrs. Chandler was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women. She was recognized for her outstanding dedication and service to the community, the state, and the nation. Jack Markell, Governor of Delaware, presented her with the award.
Mrs. Chandler was an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for over 60 years. She served on the usher board for approximately 25 of those years and has volunteered hundreds of hours to support her church. Some of her volunteer activities included vacation bible school, helping with church fundraising events, and traveling to other houses of worship for ushering duties. She had also volunteered at other churches in the community as well. She loved her pastor and church family and appreciated their hospital visits, cards, telephone calls and prayers during her illness.
Mrs. Chandler loved family get-togethers, especially on her birthdays. She loved being spoiled by her children and grandchildren and looked forward each year to seeing how she would be celebrated. She was very active and loved attending plays, movies, concerts, and other special events. She also loved to travel and had visited Seattle, Nebraska, Las Vegas, New York City, and Vermont. Mrs. Chandler had a gardener's green thumb and loved having plants throughout the house. Both of her daughters inherited her green thumb. She was a woman of faith, who always tried to see the good in everyone she met. She had a strong bond with her children and grandchildren. There was nothing she wouldn't do for her family. She especially loved her great-grands and enjoyed the time she spent with them.
Mrs. Chandler was predeceased by her son, Lucian L. Chandler, Jr., her sister Nellie M. Moore, sister Gracie M. Friday, brother Walter Foxx and brother Henry Foxx, Jr. She was also predeceased by Alice Carter, a close family friend, whom she also considered a sister.
Mrs. Chandler leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Lita C. Whitaker and Lynnette Watkins (Darius), sister Florence Bronson (Joseph) of Richmond, VA, granddaughter Shannon Chandler, grandsons Damon N. Whitaker, Dwight N. Whitaker (Kenneisha), granddaughters Lauren Christie, and Stephanie Swift (Justin), great-grandchildren Kai, Danae, Dwight Jr., Luca, Evelyn, Anais, Riah, Justin Jr., and Damon Jr. and Samyra. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and a multitude of dear friends. It would be impossible to list them all. Each of you knew the role you played in her life and how much you meant to her.
