Helen Sabrina Hall was born on January 16, 1973, to Deborah Jean Hall and Edward Clinton Hall, Sr. She was raised in Philadelphia by her mother and grandmother and later by her step-grandfather, Arthur Taylor (Daddy T). Michael Mosely greatly assumed the fatherly role and supported Deborah and Helen until his death.
Helen, named after her Nana, attended Philadelphia public schools and graduated from Martin Luther King High School. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant and was surprisingly assigned to care for her mother shortly thereafter. Helen was employed at McDonald’s for a very very short time (inquiring minds want to know why). She was a volunteer receptionist at LTK Engineering Company. When she relocated to DE, she volunteered for Canaan’s Project MOOD Narcan Program and the City of Wilmington’s Park & Rec. Dept. Helen was a saleswoman for Edwina’s Testimonial Clothing and Book “From Crack to Christ.”
Under the Christian guidance of her Nana, Helen Hall-Taylor, and Authur Taylor, Jr., Helen attended and served in various capacities at churches in Detroit, Augusta, and Philadelphia. She joined Canaan Baptist Church in July 2023, under the Shepherd of Dr. Christopher Alan Bullock, Sr. Pastor. In 1992, Helen became Mrs. Vergil Austin Sr. and became the parents of Vergil Hall-Austin, Jr. Years later, she became Mrs. Cliff Gatling and welcomed their son Machi Hall-Gatling. Helen opened her heart and became the affectionate mother-substitute to Lamar, Jaquil, Dontae, Antione, and a host of close friends to Machi and Vergil Jr. After divorcing, Helen formed a long and loving relationship with “Larry,” until his death.
During her last year on earth, she spent quality time with her brother Sion who was reunited within two days of their arrival in Wilmington. She also found love again with Ricky Roberts, who brought her much attention, care, and affection. They were scheduled to marry on August 3rd. Unfortunately, it did not come to fruition; however, a phone was placed to her ear as she prepared for her heavenly transition and Ricky serenaded her with a beautifully recorded song, “I Was Born to Love You.”
Helen enjoyed modern and tap dancing at Simon Recreation Center. She also loved coloring books, word searches, and the numbering coloring app on her iPhone. From her wheelchair, she enjoyed dancing, shopping, and bowling. A few special friends (you know who you are) comforted and supported her until the end.
Helen leaves to cherish her memories: brother Sion Sinclair Hall; sons Vergil Jr. and Machi; grandchildren Raiona Hall, King Austin, Prince Austin, and Taylor Austin; aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of special, special friends. Humbly submitted by family.
