Rev. Gloria J. Moore

Reverend Gloria Jean Moore was born July 11, 1951, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late George and Gracie Lee Sheridan. As a child, she was so good and obedient that sometimes her mother called her “glorious.” Surrounded by her loved ones, she peacefully entered eternal rest on Friday, December 13, 2024, in Wilmington, DE. 

Gloria received her early education at Pershing Junior High, graduating in 1966. In 1969, she graduated from Fort Hamilton High School, both located in Brooklyn, NY. Rev. Moore was extremely serious about her dedicated relationship with God, which led her to attend and graduate from the New York Theological Seminary.

In 1975, Gloria met and married Gregory Moore. This union was blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Girena, whom she affectionally called “her lovely flower.” Gloria deeply adored, loved, and was proud of Girena, and Girena has always been so proud of her mother as well. Gloria also became a loving mother to her two bonus sons, Sean Sheridan and Chris Sheridan, from her late sister, Geraldine Sheridan. She always spoke very highly of them. Gloria loved her family, spend time with them in fellowship, and sharing special moments with them.

Gloria enjoyed reading, learning, writing, dancing, and spending quality time with her family. She was such a lovable person who always cared about people. As she grew older, Gloria liked doing many different things. In her twenties, she developed a strong passion for modern dance, which became a meaningful way for her to express herself after overcoming her earlier quiet and shy nature. Later, she transformed this passion into praise dancing for God. Gloria also was interested in television and video production. In her mid-thirties and forties she excelled in this field, showcasing her talents in broadcasting. Gloria worked for Channel 13 and Channel 11 in New York, where she thrived in video production.

Rev. Moore’s earliest church memories are at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle in Jamaica Queens, NY, where she served faithfully for many years. Inspired by a vision from God, she established a new video ministry while serving there. The ministry likely continues to this day. Additionally, Rev. Moore served as an Associate Minister at St. Paul’s Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA. She was a Spiritual Advisor to the Women’s Ministry, and the Leader of the Tucker House Nursing Home Ministry. Pastor Moore also completed her Clinical Pastoral Education at St. Mary’s Hospital of Children in New York and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) in Philadelphia. At HUP, she initiated, developed, and facilitated “A Healing Dialogue” for the nursing staff on the GYN Oncology units. Her impactful work earned her the Bereavement Counselor Award at Philippian Baptist Church.

Pastor Moore was a trailblazer, becoming the first African American to serve as a staff chaplain for Christiana Care Health Systems in Newark, DE. For 14 years, she served as the Resident Chaplain for Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association in Ocean Grove, NJ. In addition, she co-founded “Youth Inspired Youth,” a Christian Interdenominational Outreach Ministry designed to develop the character and spiritual gifts of adolescents. In 2002, Gloria relocated from Queens, NY to Wilmington, DE. Shortly after, she began teaching as an adjunct professor for Geneva College at the Center for Urban Theological Studies in Philadelphia, PA.

This devoted woman of God was the founder of The Lord’s Sweet Hour of Prayer Ministries, Inc., a para-church ministry dedicated to providing spiritual and intellectual support to refresh, renew, and revive clergy and ministry leaders. Her favorite scripture was: “Do not be anxious for anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7, NIV).

Gloria was preceded in death by her mother, Gracie Lee Sheridan; her father, George Sheridan; and her sister, Geraldine Sheridan.

Gloria leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Girena Moore; loving sons, Sean Sheridan and Chris Sheridan; five beloved grandchildren, Brianna, Christina, Chris Jr., Chase, and Takai; and a host of dear friends
