Garry Woodly was born on November 15, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Edward Woodly, Jr. and the late Anne Birch. It is with great sorrow that the family announces his passing away. He went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 49.
Garry attended Southwestern High School. He graduated from Job Corp and received his certification in Masonry. Garry later attended Texas Careers Institute and received his certification as a Medical Assistant. He was employed with Amazon prior to his health challenges.
Garry was a faithful member of the New Hope Baptist Church. He joined the usher board along with his mother-in-law and often picked with her saying, “Mrs. Dorothy, you know we ushers have to stick together”. Later, he and Aretha were married at New Hope on September 21, 2013. Garry was an active member at the New Hope Baptist Church, in particularly, he dedicated his time through the years to preparing Sunrise Breakfast on Easter mornings along with his wife and sister-in-law, Peaches. Garry truly leaned on the Lord and knew where his help came from.
Garry will be remembered as a staunch Superman fan, who was a mild temper, humble, and fun-loving guy. Family and friends often affectionately called him a “Jack of all Trades” because anytime there was a need to repair electronics and various devices, he was your man. If you needed yard work done, cameras installed, gazebos, furniture, etc., put together, he was your man. If you needed a tutorial regarding any subject matter, he either read about it or watched a show. Garry even built his own home theater in his basement from scratch.
Garry often enjoyed fishing, camping, biking, kayaking, and road trips with his wife and his dog Max. However, his passion was fishing. It was quality time spent with his dad growing up that stuck with him through his adult years. Fishing was an event that both he and his wife enjoyed, of course after he taught her how to fish! In fact, the weekend before his transition Garry and his wife enjoyed a fishing boat trip near Boston, Massachusetts. The Lord allowed him that one passion he held so dear to be the last event here on earth – right BEFORE the major event of Eternal Life with his Savior.
Garry was preceded in death by his father, Edward Woodly, Jr., his mother, Anne Birch, and his sister, Kira J.B. Holloway Barzey.
Garry was married to Aretha Woodly and from this union they adopted a dog, named Max.
“Thoughts from his wife ……“I am so thankful the Lord allowed our paths to cross. To be blessed with a husband and a best friend. We did just about everything together.” Your sense of humor was bar none – our home and marriage was truly blessed with Love & Laughter.
I affectionately called you Gare Bear because of how caring of a person you were with me, Max and so many others, despite the challenges you endured as a child growing up. Anyone who conversed with you took away “something” but more so how nice of a guy you were.
I often told you that you were the epidemy of this scripture, Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church – and you did just that until your last days here on earth.”
Garry is survived by his wife, Aretha Woodly and dog Max, brother, Edward Woodly, III, and sister-in-law Jeanette Woodly, nephew, Shaquille J. Woodly, nieces, Mekayla J. Woodly and Jaelyn H. Williams. His sister’s children, nephews, Markus Barzey, Devon Barzey Jr., Kevon Barzey, and niece Kyanna Barzey and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
