Doris Dora Alston

October 31, 1927 — April 16, 2005

Age 76 felt the Master's hands, surrounded by her loving family, friends, her Pastor and First Lady, she peacefully joined her Saviour, at her residence on Saturday, April 16, 2005, to her eternal home not made by hand. "Mom" Doris, as she was affectionately calledwas born on Octobr 31, 1928 to the late Major and Mandy Jones in Proctorsville NC. She moved to Wilmington, DE in 1954 and worked at the mushroom plant in Kenneth Square, PA until her loving husband insisted that she quit and be the homemaker Go Had called he to be. She joined New Mt. Bethel Baptist Church and later became a chartered member of the Latter Day Baptist Church where she was committed and erved faithfully until she attained her heavenly home. She was a loyal member of he church and served on the Usher Board as secretary, acting president, and held the position of treasurer for many years even as she finished her Christian mission. She was honored by the ICUAas an "outstanding ushe." In addition she served on the kitchen comittee, Missionary and Mother Boards, president of Hospitality, Willing Worker, and Pastor's Aid. She seldom missed attending church services or activities. Since her arrival in DE she was known in the community as "Mom Doris" and was always giving Godly advice, financing, feeding and clothing to the poor, the down trodden and those that just needed a listening ear. She cared for them as if they were her own. Preceding her in death was her husband Joseph Alston; and a son Andrew Baker. She leaves to cherish many beautful memories 5 daughters, Ruth Helen Collins and her husband, Elroy, Vasthi Baer-Fowlkes and Her husband Glenn, Ruth Helen Baker of Rocky Mt., NC, Cheryl L. Cooperof Cincinnati, OH and Mary Ann Baker of Stamford, CT; 1 adopted daughter Donzella Lum; 1 son Jerom Baker; 1 adopted son Jesse Sharp of Rocky Mt., N.C., 2 sisters-in-law 1 brother-in-law; 30 grandchildren; 59 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Mother Alston had 4 dedicated friends, Rose Wilson, Jeanette Cooper, Sarah Leonard and Aunt Mae Worley; dependable grand and great grandchildren, Andrew, Shaletha and Chardae Steward, Alicia Charles and Crystal, Cindy and Elroy Collins.
