Mother Dora Ann Polk was born in Salem, New Jersey on September 3rd, 1935 to the late
Ralph L. Anderson Sr. and Pearl F. Anderson.
Dora was one of six children (Ralph Anderson Jr., Jean Anderson-Watkins, Elaine Anderson,
Marie Russ, and Allen Anderson) and raised in a Christian home. She was educated in the
Salem county public school system.
Dora worked for thirty-three years at Anchor Hocking; and from 1995-2001 she worked part-time
as a school bus aide.
In 1952 she met and married the love of her life, Henry F. Polk and to this union 5 children were
born, Henry A. Polk, Patricia L. Wright, Michael T. Polk, Kaheem Khalil Ali (Avery D. Polk) and
Gloria A. Wright.
Dora accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1985. She believed that after salvation you
must be filled with the Holy Ghost for that is what will keep you from the sins of the world. This
message she preached to her loved ones for she loved them deeply and wanted them to be
saved and filled. She also loved her church families. The Lord blessed her with two,
Tabernacle of Praise and Church on the Rock Ministries. While active at Tabernacle of Praise,
Dora enjoyed singing with the female choir and being an usher. In 2018 Dora moved to
Delaware to live in her daughter’s home. It was at this time that she became a member of
Church on the Rock Ministries and was soon appointed a mother in the church. Dora was
affectionately known for greeting everybody with a “Hey baby” or “Hey sweetie.” No one was
exempt.
Dora enjoyed word search puzzles, watching Rev. Jimmy Swaggart on TV and eating at many
restaurants or family gatherings. She loved the word of God and would always remind her
daughter Gloria to get her scripture readings and prayers from Cheryl, the T.O.P. church
secretary.
Mother Dora had a special relationship with her son-in law Tony who always teamed up with her
against Gloria to get what she wanted. She would always say, “I know who will take care of me”
referring to her Tony. Gloria thanks Tony who was there when she wasn’t due to her work
schedule.
Granny, as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren, was loved by them and she
loved them. TJ would bring her ice cream and cake even when we said no. Shawn would
encourage her to walk but she didn’t but she let him show her how to cook with no salt and just
herbs to be healthier. Oh how she loved her grandchildren.
Dora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all of her siblings except Elaine
Anderson who is now 94 and preceded in death also by her two sons, Michael T. Polk and Avery
D. Polk
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Henry A. Polk (Valerie), Patricia L. Wright, and
Gloria A. Wright (Tony); her sister Elaine, 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, as well as a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
