Deaconess Mildred Hickman

February 20, 1929 — January 30, 2017

Mother Hickman was instrumental in assisting her husband in the ministry.
When Pastor Hickman and Mother Hickman began their ministry at Mt. Olive the membership was only 30 people. During their ministry the membership grew to over 500 members strong. This made Mt. Olive the largest Black Church in the Bridgeville and surrounding areas. Under Mother Hickman and Pastor Hickman's leadership the Mass Choir was established, the Mt. Olive Specials was established, the Men's Choir was established along with the Baby Dolls(known as the Youth choir ) was established.
Before their ministry members of the church traveled to Dover and Trap pond for baptisms. Under their leadership the church was able to install a baptismal pool. Under their leadership building additions, along with renovations were made to accommodate the 500 member fellowship.
Mother Hickman was a true mother to the members of each church she served and to people within her pathway throughout her life. Having served at Mt. Olive for over 40 years she mothered earned the name of Mom first, All of the young adults, boys, girls a like called her Mom. She truly earned this name because she was a real mom to them by counseling, comforting, encouraging, nurturing, correcting, and admonishing them when they needed it. In plan terms she loved everyone she met.
