Otis J. Loweryberg, Jr., son of the late Johnnie M. Palmer-Lowery and Otis J. Loweryberg, was born on June 20, 1929 in Birmingham, AL. He departed this life on Monday, April 22, 2013 at home in the care of his loving wife, Bettie. Otis spent most of his growing years in the Alabama area even though his family moved around quite a bit in the states of Ohio, Massachusetts, and Alabama. He completed his high school education in Ohio, graduating at age 16. He immediately joined the United States Air Force and served admirably during the decade of the 1950's. He also pursued higher education while in the military and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. In 1971 on a long train ride to Alabama, he met Bettie Eaton. Six months later they were united in holy matrimony. They had one son, Aaron, whom they adored. "Dea. Otis Loweryberg" was a longstanding deacon in the Baptist church having served at Shiloh Baptist and Union Baptist churches. He taught Bible Study classes and served as Sunday School Superintendent. He joined Cornerstone Fellowship Baptist Church when it first opened its doors and he became one of its first deacons. He faithfully attended Sunday School and his comments were insightful and sometimes amusing. He knew and loved his Bible and wanted everyone to know that it was Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth! Dea. Loweryberg worked as an Operator at the S. L. Piping Systems for more than 25 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Rising Sun Lodge #2 and a lifetime member of the NAACP. As a Wilmington Senior Center volunteer, he delivered meals to the elderly until he was no longer able to do so. His various acts of service to others caused him to be the recipient of numerous accolades and awards over the years. Dea. Loweryberg was a people person! Nearly everyone knew Dea. Loweryberg and it seems he knew everyone or they each knew someone in common. He enjoyed talking with people and was never at a loss for words -- he always had a story! He thoroughly enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, historical books and he was always willing to share wisdom with others. He also enjoyed drawing and he was a student of the martial arts earning a black belt. Dea. Loweryberg is preceded in death by his two brothers, William and Leroy.
