Blondell Prophet

A beautiful rose was plucked from the garden when an angel came and slipped Blondell away to eternal rest in the early morning on the 20th day of November 2023, at 11:10 a.m. at her residence in Wilmington, Delaware.

Blondell Jackson, the daughter of the late Herman Jackson and Sadie Wise Jackson was born on July 17, 1933, in Springfield, South Carolina where she was raised and went on to complete her early education in the Springfield School system. She confessed her faith in the Lord, was baptized, and received her early spiritual education at Oakey Springs, Baptist Church in Springfield, South Carolina.

On July 26, 1948, Blondell began her beautiful marital union to the late Ben (L.B.) Prophet. From this union 5 children were born 3 sons and 2 daughters. After the returning from World War II, L.B. moved to Wilmington, Delaware, joining family members who had previously moved there. He later sent for Blondell, Ben Jr., and Marvin to join him to start their new life. Soon after, they purchased a home in Dunleith Estates, an All-Black subdivision in New Castle, Delaware designed for Black World War II Veterans. L.B. and Blondell would later add 3 more children to their union, Linda, Joyce Patricia, and Robert. Blondell went on to be a beautiful wife to L.B. for 58 years.

Blondell worked for the “Home for Aged Women” for 12 years and later worked for a several families in and around Wilmington until her retirement.

A dedicated Mother and Servant, Blondell was a faithful Woman of God. She raised her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to be believers and servants of God as well as productive citizens. Blondell united herself and her family with the New Calvary Baptist Church and was an unwavering member for over a half-century.

She lent her talent to the choir, Pastor’s Aide, Missionary and Culinary Ministries. Generations of her children and adults have enjoyed her cooking during Vacation Bible School, afternoon services, Family Reunions and special occasions.

Blondell loved spending time with family. One of her favorite holiday’s was Christmas where she would traditionally gather family and friends and host a big Christmas Breakfast each year. After cooking breakfast, she would she was known to sneak away and wrap last minute gifts. If you were in her home, you received a gift. Blondell was a compassionate woman, the kind of woman to have cold water waiting for sanitation workers on a hot summer day. The kind of woman who fed you if you were hungry, clothed you if you were unclothed, she may sneak you $2.00 just because she had it. She was the kind of woman who simply didn’t want to see anyone lack anything.

Blondell loved to travel and as L.B. used to affectionally say “Blondell has never seen a bus trip she didn’t want to go on.” She was always a strong supporter and giver of her time, talent, gifts and money to causes she believed in. Blondell was always outspoken, and she fearlessly made her opinions known. Blondell was known for delivering a funny comment and providing good, sound wisdom and advice.

Blondell stood as an example of Faith and Christian Love.

Her children arise up and call her blessed (Proverbs 31-28).

Blondell was preceded in death by her husband L.B. in 2006, two daughters, Linda Thornton (August 2020) and Joyce Patricia Singleton (October 2020); her sisters Clarabelle Mays, Sadell Prophet, Dorothy Ruth James, Almeta Ryant and Lela Williams; and her brothers Herman “June” Jackson Jr., Willie Marion “Tuby” Jackson, Chester Jackson, and David Jackson.

Blondell leaves to cherish her memories, sons: Ben (Grace) Prophet and Marvin (Margaret) Prophet of Wilmington, Delaware; and Robert (Valeria) Prophet, of Charlotte, N.C.; her sister Karean Hart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her sisters-in-law Geneva Jackson and Dorothy Jackson; her brothers-in-law Isaiah Ryan and Frank Hart, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
