Amir Shabazz

Lovingly known to his family and friends as "Nut", departed this life on September 9, 2012 in Cleveland, OH. He was born, Steven Jones, to Milton and Berniece Jones on December 27, 1961 in Cleveland. He received his education through the public schools of Wilmington, DE. He enjoyed displaying "his" version of mixed martial arts, socializing with family and friends, working with his hands, and in his later years hanging with his best friend/child Poppa. He held various employments in Wilmington, Elkton, MD and Atlanta, GA before finally settling in Cleveland. About 1983 he began following andpracticing the Islamic faith. It was also about this time that he legally changed his name to Amir Hassan Shabazz. On August 16, 1986, Amir was wed to his wife Mattie Barksdale in Wilmington. From this union came their daughter, Aiysha Barksdale. Amir was predeceased by his daughter, Aiysha Barksdale; father, Milton Jones; grandfather, William Rice; grandparents, LaRue and Blanche Jackson; sister, Tara Jones and brother, Milton Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mattie Shabazz; mother, Berniece Jones; children, Shamir Hooks of Cleveland, Latisha and Nester Barksdale of New York, Poppa of Cleveland; sisters Deborah Jackson of Wilmington, Mildred and Patricia Jones of Cleveland; brothers, Wayne Jackson of Wilmington, Robert Jones of Cleveland; five grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends. Janazah Service will be held on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 11 am at The House of Wright Mortuary, 208 E. 35th St., Wilmington, DE 19802. There will not be a viewing.
