It is with deep sorrow and love that we mourn the passing of Alice Johnson of Smyrna, DE . Surrounded by family Alice passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at the age of 80.
Alice Johnson was born November 11, 1943, to the late Henrietta and Louis Johnson Sr., she lived in Laurel, DE with her siblings: the late Fannie Johnson, Irene (Thomas) Tabb, and Louis Johnson Jr.; Alice could only attend schools that were for black children. Her early education started at Paul Lawerence Dunbar School in Laurel, DE. Later, Alice attended William C. Jason High School located in Georgetown, DE. After graduating Alice set off to live in New York City with her sister. Alice loved the city-life but she decided to return to Delaware.
Shortly after returning to Delaware Alice met the love of her life, the late Conrad Spencer, and together they raised a family. Alice was the mother of three children: Vernita (Thomas) Brown, Tyrone (Michelle) Spencer, and Elvira Ellis. She was the grandmother of nine: Taquania, Tiesha, Brianna, Dekara, Keisha, LaCriessia, LaJerica, Jerome, and the late LaVarr Brown. Alice was the great grandmother of three: Keyare, Makhyah, and Nolan; she was also the great-great grandmother of Keyana.
Alice was a receptionist at the News Journal for 25 years. She welcomed hundreds of people with a pleasant smile. Alice was a people person; if you spoke to her once you walked away with a new friend.
After retiring Alice was an avid reader and a word-find whiz. She was an amazing cook and loved to bake desserts. Alice would tinker with new recipes to make them her own. She really loved food, especially the tasting part.
Alice was naturally creative; she used her talents for drawing, coloring, and painting. She loved making arts & crafts for the different holidays. She loved decorating, but her passion was for Christmas. It was her favorite holiday, she planned for it all year long. She loved Christmas trees; this year she planned to put one in every room.
Alice enjoyed listening and dancing to music; Marvin Sease had a special place in her heart. If it was a social occasion she was there with her drink of choice, Vodka. Alice’s personality made her the life of any event; she just knew how to have fun.
Alice loved spending time with her family & friends, they brought her joy and happiness. Alice was loved tremendously by her family and friends, both near and far. She will be greatly missed.
