On September 27, 2023, the world lost a beloved soul, Walter Tyrone Brown, known affectionately as "Tyrone." Born on September 8, 1948, Tyrone's journey through life was a tapestry of love, resilience, and unwavering commitment, which he lived out until his passing, just over one week after celebrating his 75th birthday surrounded by the warmth of family and friends.
Tyrone was the youngest child of Walter J. Brown and Mary Elizabeth Elliott-Brown, two pillars of the Townsend, DE community. He remained steadfastly rooted in his MOT hometown throughout his lifetime, a testament to his deep connection to his roots.
Tyrone held a special place in the hearts of his nieces, nephews, and friends, earning him the title of "Favorite Uncle." His presence in Delaware was a beacon of love, and he showered his family with affection and pride in countless ways. Whether in good health or facing adversity, Tyrone was a comforting and supportive presence for his siblings. His generosity knew no bounds, as he tirelessly visited the sick and those confined to their homes, demonstrating unwavering commitment to his community. Tyrone's faith was paramount, and he served as a lay-speaker in the United Methodist Church for many years, upholding a cherished family tradition of devotion.
Tyrone's life was a testament to the value of hard work. As a young man, he took part in daily chores such as preparing dinner by wringing a chicken's neck, tending to the garden, and chopping wood, all part of the Townsend way of life. After a remarkable 33-year career at DuPont Experimental Station, he ventured into self-employment for over a decade.
For those who had the privilege of witnessing Tyrone on the dance floor, they can attest to the joy and energy he brought to every occasion. In his younger days, he and Donald could drop into a split without hesitation, captivating everyone around them. Gardening, daily physical activity and the Phillies & Philadelphia Eagles were among his passions, and he was a connoisseur of fine dining establishments.
Tyrone's life was marked by selfless service. He bravely served as an Infantryman in the U.S. Army, alongside his brother, Richard, during the tumultuous Vietnam War era. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm Marksman (Rifle) to name a few.
Tyrone joins parents and his beloved siblings who preceded him in death: Paul Elliott, Clarence Elliott, Floyd Elliott, Lillian "Peggy" Waters, Cora "Jeanette" Lindsay, Donald Brown, Alice Brown-Skinner, and Richard Brown, leaving behind a void that can never truly be filled.
His legacy of love and devotion lives on through his cherished daughter, Tylisa Owens, his attentive granddaughters Jade, Alexa, Zhaiona, and Mya, as well as his great-grandson Bryson and a host of his favorite nieces and nephews. He was also a loving Godfather to Tiffany Robinson and a forever friend to Joan Mitchell (Wanda, Tereska, Tanya, De'Andre and Grayson).
To say that Tyrone will be missed is an understatement. He was indeed a one-of-a-kind soul, and his absence leaves a profound emptiness in our hearts and in the world. His enduring love, kindness, and commitment to his family and community will forever be cherished and remembered with heartfelt gratitude. Though he may have left our earthly presence, his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched and the love he shared.
