Luther M. Davis was born on March 20, 1933, to Charlie and Martha Davis. He made his transition peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2020 surrounded by his daughters Vergie and Janet and son-in law Bruce at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. Luther received his early childhood education in Phenix, Va., graduated from Charlotte County High School and then entered the United States Air Force. During his 20 years as a Military Police Officer, he served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Upon retiring as a Staff Sergeant in 1971 he moved with his family to Delaware. He managed a convenience store called Cumberland Farms on Miller Rd. in Wilmington for two years and then accepted a position with the New Castle County Sheriff's Department. During this time, he also co-founded Davis Day Care with his wife, which served countless families throughout Wilmington for more than 15 years. After retiring from the Sheriff's Department, Luther continued to do work in the field of security through various companies up until he was 85 years old. His last employer was Global Protection Management, LLC where he received special recognition for exemplary service. Luther was a proud and devoted member of many organizations including, but not limited to, the American Legion Brandywine Post 12, Veterans of Foreign War #2765, the African American Medal of Honor Memorial Association Honor Color Guard and Masonic Lodge #21. He also supported a wide variety of organizations such as the NAACP, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, St Jude's Children Research Hospital, The Nature Conservancy, Boys Town, and the CAF Red Tail Squadron. Luther, who liked to refer to himself as the head cock-a-doodle-doo, enjoyed spending time listening to the blues - B.B. King was his all-time favorite. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading, discussing politics, growing tomatoes in his garden, buying all types of technology and gadgets, telling jokes and trash talking on his back deck with his friend Percy, neighbor Jeff and beloved son-in-law Bruce. He really liked back yard barbeques and when winter hit he would lovingly harass Bruce to throw on a coat, start up the grill and make him what came to be known in our home as "winter burgers." Luther was predeceased by his parents Charlie and Martha Davis, three brothers Hubert, Columbus, Herbert, Joe and one sister Vergie. He is survived by his wife, Callie, 2 daughters Vergie Cooper (Bruce) and Janet Davis, 1 son - Hakim Warren, 2 brothers - Ryland and Jerry Wayne Davis, 1 sister- Ruth Ann Haskins, 9 grandchildren - Qiana Davis, Jennifer Davis, Jisneidi Asiedu, Theresa Crawford (Jeremy), Synclare Cooper (Lauren), Hakira Casey, Eric and Delayne Cooper and Vincent Davis Jr., 6 great grandchildren - Dante Hilton, Zaria McNeil, Nahla Swift, Lausyn, Ja'Lynn and Jaemisyn Cooper, 3 devoted nephews - Norman Davis and Melvin and Larry Bell; close personal friend Percy Ponder Sr., and a host of relatives and friends.
