Derrick Elijah Lightfoot, known to his loved ones as Derry, passed away on December 31, 2023, in Wilmington, Delaware, at the age of 73, after a short illness. He was born on May 3, 1950, in Massillon, Ohio, to his late father, Elijah Lightfoot, and his mother, Ann Lightfoot, who is 95 years old. Derry was baptized and accepted Christ at a young age.
Derry was a larger than life person who cared deeply about his family, loved ones and friends. He will be remembered for his warm and compassionate nature.
Derry had an impressive educational background, having attended Horace Mann Elementary School, Lorin Andrews Junior High and Massillon Washington High School,
where he played football. He furthered his education at The Ohio State University, where he earned both a Bachelor's and two Master's degrees. Derry was a proud OSU
alum.
Throughout his career, Derry worked as a municipal planning expert, specializing in public transportation. He dedicated his expertise to transit departments in various cities, including Columbus, Ohio, New York City, Dallas, Knoxville, and the City of Wilmington Department of Planning, where he spent many years before retiring in 20.
Derry found joy in his hobbies, especially when he gathered with other members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He loved being a Que. He was also actively involved in
Wilmington as a mentor to Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, making a positive impact on the lives of many young individuals. Derry also loved long car trips, camping and being in the outdoors.
Derry leaves behind a loving family, including his mother Ann, his long-time companion, Sandra Taylor, his sister Angela Holdren, his brother Brian P. Lightfoot, and his sister Lori E. Lightfoot (Amy Eshleman). He is also survived by his first niece Stacey L. Smith, his daughter Danielle, grandchildren, and numerous other nieces and nephews, as well as a host of fraternity brothers who have all been close for decades.
Derry's memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing
him. May he rest in peace.
